What is Obesogens ?

Obesogens are chemical compounds foreign to the entire body which are hypothesized to disrupt typical development or homeostasis of metabolism of lipids ultimately resulting in obesity. Obesogens might be functionally defined as chemical substances that inappropriately alter lipid homeostasis and fat storage, transform metabolic setpoints, disrupt energy steadiness or modify the regulation of appetite and satiety to advertise fat accumulation and obesity.

There are lots of proposed mechanisms through which obesogens can act, which includes alterations in the action of metabolic sensors; dysregulation of sex steroid synthesis, motion or breakdown; adjustments within the central integration of power stability including the regulation of appetite and satiety; and reprogramming metabolic setpoints. A number of these proposed pathways contain inappropriate modulation of nuclear receptor function; therefore, these compounds are classified as endocrine disrupting chemicals. A number of examples of substances that might be labeled as obesogens contain tributyltin, bisphenol A, diethylhexylphthalate, and perfluorooctanoate.
